In May, the Tirroan Waste Facility will undergo significant changes as the Council converts the landfill into a waste transfer station with a new gatehouse. These changes will impact access to the facility throughout the month.
Key Dates and Changes
- Full Closure on May 8
The facility will be completely closed on Wednesday, May 8, to pour the concrete slab for the new gatehouse. - Transition to a Transfer Station
As the landfill nears the end of its usable life, state regulations prevent the Council from expanding it without installing a weighbridge. The Council has decided that upgrading to a waste transfer station is the most cost-effective solution.
Benefits of the New Transfer Station
- Improved Recycling
The new transfer station will allow for better separation of recyclable materials, leading to increased resource recovery. - Environmental Protection
Waste transferred to the Regional Landfill will benefit from advanced environmental protections, including:- Leachate control
- Landfill capping
- Efficient compaction equipment
- Landfill gas capture systems
Gatehouse Building
- The new gatehouse will help in accurately recording transactions at the site.
Alternative Disposal Site
- Childers Waste Facility
During the closure, residents can use the Childers Waste Facility, which is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm and weekends from 9 am to 12:30 pm.
Closure of Tirroan Tip Shop
- The tip shop at the Tirroan Waste Facility will be closed from Tuesday, May 7, 2024, to Friday, June 28, 2024, due to construction.
Important Reminders
- Changed Traffic Conditions
Visitors to the site should be aware of changed traffic conditions during the construction phase and exercise extra caution. - Extended Closure
There will be an extended closure for road upgrades and asphalting. The Council will provide further updates as information becomes available.
For more information and updates, residents are encouraged to stay informed through Council announcements.
